Agent safety and governance were the main story, with a US government guidance document, an Indian incident report and OpenAI's own disclosures. Open-weight models keep gaining share and several model releases landed. Anthropic had a mixed day, with a customer loss alongside research output.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), National Security Agency’s Super Intelligence Security Center (NSA SISC) and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) published Key Practices for Incident Readiness and Response in Super Intelligence Training and Evaluation. The product outlines ten voluntary core practices to help organizations that train and evaluate highly capable super intelligence (SI) agents—particularly pre-deployment, cutting edge SI agents with reduced safeguards or other high-risk, non-public systems—prepare for and manage SI control incidents. A SI control incident occurs when one or more SI agents takes uninstructed actions that conflict with or compromise policies, controls, or security measures that scope the task and provide human oversight. This product aligns with cyber incident response best practices, includes additional SI considerations and highlights the importance of testing controls and validating containment before resuming SI agent activities. It addresses: measures for limiting agent access to information, systems, tools, and networks; monitoring for unexpected activity; preserving evidence and shutting down undesir…

  • Schneier discusses how edited open-weight AI models, including abliterated ones, can carry hidden backdoors that users rarely verify.

    Schneier on Securityai-securityopen-weightbackdoor
    Feed excerpt

This is a problem: Any open model whose weights have been edited can carry a backdoor, whether it’s a task-specific fine-tune, a merged adapter or an abliterated build. We have abliterated models in the title because it’s the most popular reason people download modified weights without verifying what’s inside. Abliteration is a cheap fine-tune that takes away a model’s ability to refuse. You find the direction in the weights that carries “no” and subtract it. The model then answers things a safety-tuned version would turn down. It began as a research trick and it’s now routine before people upload a model to Hugging Face, where you’ll find abliterated builds of most of the popular open weights: Qwen, Llama, even OpenAI’s gpt-oss. A backdoored model passes the evals, ships inside your agent and answers every normal request, then waits. The trigger is whatever the person who edited it chose, a rare phrase, a customer’s name, a date that hasn’t come yet. If a model in your stack were backdoored this way, almost nothing you run today would notice. We wanted to see for ourselves what it actually takes to hide a backdoor in one of these small open models, so we poisoned one and tested it…

I'm curious what stance others have taken? Or what they've experienced with this? I'm toying with adding a rule to our values.md that the LLM can only significantly generate one or the other. I'm reviewing a merge request at the moment where it's clear the LLM mostly did both, and they're highly tautological. And I can see how it over engineered the code, just to be able to write more tests almost.
