Top stories

Ivanti Connect Secure zero-days chained for root access. Volexity reports an attacker chained three Connect Secure zero-days to get unauthenticated root, and only two are patched so far. CISA says CVE-2026-104935, an authentication bypass, is exploited for unauthenticated remote command execution. BleepingComputer reports that Ivanti is urging immediate patching. Treat any internet-facing Connect Secure appliance as a priority and hunt for compromise, not just patch.

Microsoft's October Patch Tuesday is enormous. Microsoft fixed 1,411 flaws, including three zero-days: one actively exploited and two publicly disclosed. Krebs on Security notes this is far above a typical month. Patch testing and triage capacity, not just patch availability, is now the constraint.

GitLab patches a CVSS 10.0 unauthenticated RCE. A crafted regex in CI/CD processing lets an unauthenticated attacker run code on the server. A maximum-severity flaw in a system that holds source code and deployment credentials makes this a same-day patch for self-hosted instances.

Attackers cooked French supermarket refrigeration. Attackers remotely hijacked Danfoss controllers at hundreds of stores and pushed fridges to 50°C, forcing food disposal. The Register reports the manufacturer cites outdated firmware. It is a clear case of an OT compromise causing direct physical and financial loss.

DOJ: North Koreans have infiltrated dozens of US companies. The Justice Department says North Korean operatives are inside dozens of US firms and are recruiting Americans as facilitators. Hiring and identity verification for remote roles remain the control point.

  • Policy: CISA director Nick Andersen is touting private-sector partnerships even though the administration cut many of them. The Register.

Tech industry

  • OpenAI: an employee, Abdulrahman Alfozan, was arrested and charged by the DOJ with using a hidden recording device to intercept oral communications in an executive conference room (The Verge, The Hacker News). Separately, a federal judge ordered OpenAI to hand over hiring records and private messages in Apple's trade secrets suit over former Apple employees (TechCrunch).
  • Google: released Gemini 4 Argon, with a robotics variant, and the HN thread passed 1,000 points. The material gives no benchmarks (Hacker News). Google also plans to help promote personal vibe-coded apps into wide releases on Google Play (Ars Technica). Physical Intelligence opened a beta API for its robot foundation models (Hacker News).

  • AI economics: the IMF warns that an AI spending bust could destabilize markets (The Register). Jefferies questions LLM profitability as cheap Chinese and open-source models cut token prices (The Register). AI labs are buying archived data from dead startups, one founder getting about $25,000 for his codebase (MIT Technology Review).
  • Apple and agents: Apple announced the $299 HomeView, a 7-inch smart display that recognizes up to six users (Ars Technica). It also launched a "Switch to Safari" campaign (9to5Mac). Shopify is opening its catalog of over a billion listings to more AI shopping agents (The Verge).
  • Other: Pluto Security raised $42M for risks from employee AI-tool use (TechCrunch). Disney reportedly offered $20M for Character.AI's chatbot technology (Ars Technica). The Grace Hopper Celebration has been cancelled (Hacker News).

IT & infrastructure

  • Microsoft lifecycle: Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro have reached end of support and no longer get monthly updates (BleepingComputer). A Microsoft 365 outage hit German and UK users as Office 2021 LTSC support ended. The Register presents the timing as coincidence (The Register).
  • VMware: Broadcom's patch volume is high enough that it introduced new tools to manage the flood (The Register). Topgolf reports saving over $11.3 million after leaving VMware (Ars Technica).
  • Datacenter power: Moody's forecasts datacenters could use 17% of Dutch and 30% of Irish electricity by 2035, with energy-bill risk absent government action (The Register). Computer science & research

Thin on formal papers today. Most items are technical writing and tooling.

  • PostgreSQL 19: Peter Eisentraut blogs on the high number of features reverted during beta, partly blaming LLM-assisted code. LWN.net.
  • Anthropic source control: an engineering post on redesigning source control drew heavy HN discussion (Hacker News). The Register describes an AI-tuned monorepo built for the volume of code Claude generates (The Register).
  • ML-DSA: a Lobsters post argues against hashing the public key first and criticizes the µ message-hashing design (Lobsters).
  • Rust in the kernel: Andreas Hindborg's proposed Ownable trait, presented at Kangrejos 2026, would let Rust code safely manage C-allocated kernel objects. LWN.net.
  • Tooling: Parsimony is an open-source benchmark of how much code AI models add on SWE-bench-style patches (Hacker News). Another post applies AVX-512 to the Zig tokenizer (Lobsters). A third demonstrates RAG with a small language model entirely in the browser (Lobsters).
  • Packaging: a Gentoo developer's "A plea not to use uv-build" argues against the uv Python build backend (Lobsters).

Themes & analysis

Identity and trust plumbing is the target. Ivanti's gateway chain, GitLab's CVSS 10.0, SAP's OAuth2 credential leak, Docker Hub's cross-user push, and npm trusted-publishing hijacks are different bugs in different products. All sit where credentials, tokens, and publishing rights are brokered, and all hand an attacker the ability to act as someone else. Inventory where your organization's machine identities and publishing configurations live, and review those before the next application bug.

Patch volume is outrunning process. Microsoft shipped 1,411 fixes, and VMware is shipping enough that it built tooling to manage them. Linux kernel and PostgreSQL maintainers are separately dealing with AI-assisted code, with PostgreSQL reverting many features during beta. None of the articles links these to a common cause. My speculation is that AI-assisted bug discovery and AI-assisted code generation are both increasing the flow. If so, "patch everything quickly" stops being a workable policy and risk-ranked triage becomes mandatory.

Neglected firmware now has physical consequences. Danfoss controllers with outdated firmware spoiled food at hundreds of stores. An unauthenticated Swann camera firmware, a rootable LG TV, and phones shipping with proxy malware point the same way, as does a national register exposed through a "123456" password at a small IT contractor. The weak point is usually the unmanaged device or the small supplier, not the hardened core.

Agents are acting without a supervisor. OpenAI's dot assistant burned over 300K tokens in a day with no prompt (The Register). Claude generated a tip that reached real police, and Anthropic took over two months to notify them. A blogger saw a flood of AI bot traffic after a front-page HN post (Hacker News). The Anthropic botnet warning is, in The Register's framing, hypothetical, and I would discount it accordingly. The incidents already on record are the practical lesson: test agents with outbound actions sandboxed and budgeted.

Watch list

  • Ivanti Connect Secure: the third zero-day in the Volexity chain was unpatched at publication. Trigger: a patch or mitigation from Ivanti, and any CISA remediation deadline.
  • Nix and Lix privilege escalation: CVE IDs are not yet assigned. Trigger: ID assignment and distro advisories.
  • Danfoss controllers: remediation guidance and the scope of affected stores are unclear. Trigger: a manufacturer advisory or a repeat incident at other retailers.
  • Tesla robotaxi probe: NHTSA is evaluating school-zone speeding after a defects request. Trigger: a formal investigation opening or a Tesla response.
  • OpenAI litigation and prosecution: the Apple trade secrets discovery order and the Alfozan case. Trigger: production of hiring records, or further DOJ filings.
  • Linux Assisted-by tag decision: developers plan to remove the AI-disclosure requirement. Trigger: a formal policy change in the kernel documentation, ahead of the Linux 7.4 merge window that carries the Nova Rust changes.

Method: it takes the patches that benchmarks already publish (DeepSWE, SWE-bench Verified, SWE-bench Live) and counts "coding units": syntax elements like statements, calls, names and literals. I didn't use lines of code, so cramming code isn't rewarded. Deleted code is subtracted, so it measures net units. GPT-6 and Claude 5.5 have no public patches yet, so I ran them myself on 3–10 tasks on my own subscriptions (shown as faded circles, not ranked). Any feedback or model contributions are welcome, especially public patch exports for newer models. GitHub: https://github.com/La5u/Parsimony Not affiliated with any of the benchmarks. Rust's system of ownership and borrowed references is convenient when it can correctly model a program's needs. The Rust for Linux project has worked to provide adapters between Rust's semantics and the existing C code in the kernel. At Kangrejos 2026, Andreas Hindborg spoke about a patch series implementing the next such adaptor: an Ownable trait for representing objects that are allocated in C code, but which Rust code is responsible for cleaning up (if not necessarily deallocating) when it is done with them. He hoped to finally reach a consensus on the patch series, after months of discussion on the mailing list.

Eisentraut: The reverts will continue until morale improves

PostgreSQL's Peter Eisentraut blogs on the high number of features reverted from PostgreSQL 19 during beta, partly blaming LLM-assisted code.

    postgresqlopen-sourcellm
    Feed excerpt

PostgreSQL core team member Peter Eisentraut has written a blog post reflecting on the "unusually high number of features" that have been taken out of the upcoming PostgreSQL 19 release since the beta period began. Some of the reverted features had significant architectural defects that would have been hard to fix quickly and during beta. But there was also a long tail of relatively harmless issues involving various edge cases. In past times, many of these would not have surfaced until much later and we would have fixed them bit by bit over the subsequent five years. But with LLM-assisted code review, these kinds of things can get found much faster, and then you're staring at a list of like forty defect reports. And even if each of them requires only a three-line fix on average, there is a fixed overhead to dealing with each of these, and then you run out of time. Most if not all of the affected reverted features were written a long time ago when LLM-assisted code review was not as useful as it is now, meaning that the effective quality bar has been raised after the time the feature was written and committed. Unless the capabilities of LLM-assisted code review keep improving at the…
